Refyrsen: wives are actually a bad bait, but it's just that the more it's mainstream (mobage like im@s, granblue and kancolle) the more authors join in to get a piece of the pie, the more they want to play it safe to maximize profits. Even wicked edgelords often go easy on kancolle because it's easy money.

refyrsen: I mean the former, it's not exclusive to kancolle, that's why I mentioned to you other similar products that have a very similar output. Mobage reach an audience way bigger than anime and manga (or console videogames for that matter), it's a pool of money they just can't ignore, so they keep squeezing it the same way they started.

Not so sure if that's true, it might be more the scanning habits of people, though every series has characters which get more vanilla than others (other big example is Touhou's Okuu), though something like GBF isn't exactly lacking in dark stuff.

Though I do wonder considering how between Suzuya and Sanae, the former has more vanilla and the latter doesn't.

@Palaxius: I don't deny that, but I don't think that's all there is to it. (Disclaimer: I have nothing to back up my claims other than my perception on exh.)
I'm not sure if you're implying that popularity always pushes doujins towards vanilla (always true to some extent), or if it's something more specific to KanColle. Personally I'm leaning towards the latter (and I see KC as a vanilla doujins machine).
I think the setting of a series (and sometimes fandom) counts a lot in what the public expects from it.
Regarding money, lesser known artists need to target the most popular series, I agree. But for the famous ones I doubt it makes much difference.
If they want to draw e.g. mindbreak or corruption, it's probably fine on KanColle since it's popular, but im@s just makes more sense in regard to each series setting. Plus im@s is also plenty popular as well.
As such, I wouldn't rule out that the wicked edgelords you're referring to (Asanagi? Aya Shachou?) went easy on KC because the setting inspired them tamer stories.

@MackDiesel: I agree, Okuu is a good example about how fandom can create specific trends. Shimakaze-kun is another.
I guess Touhou gets more vanilla doujins nowadays than it used to because vanilla was less prevalent in hentai (not just Touhou). Overtime I think digital tools have shifted focus from content (comedy, plot, fetishes - futa, tentacles, etc) to art quality.
