On a re-read, I get the distinct impression that Lefty knew exactly what was going to happen. Maybe he even volunteered at some point when Righty was asleep.

The real kicker is how before the surgery, everyone refers to them as two people ("Good luck you two", "This is where you two will sleep"), but afterwards refers to the survivor as if he had been, and had always been, only one person ("You're a normal person now!"). Not only is Lefty "dead", he's been retroactively stripped of personhood.

Vocalization requires a diaphragm, silly! Severed heads don't have one, all they can do is see, hear, feel, smell, and move facial musculature.

Coincidentally, the functions a head carries out also bar it from ever being reapplied to a spinal column- it'd be like trying to fix fiber optics with a clamp!

This and rhe discarding of the one points to the survivor having deep-seated mental issues, as the removal of a living and functioning head is rarely carried out except in cases of life threatening conditions.
