Found the original work! It's from a collection called "Squash" by Hajime Karou. Tbh I don't wanna divulge too much more info because the whole thing was once on this site but got whacked by a dmca, but you can find the whole thing online.
The (former) mermaid took on the girl's appearance and memories, and she's going to forget she ever was a mermaid. So, in what way is she still herself?
On another note: Speech bubble censoring of a futanari? At least that's what I get from the girl's reactions.

The way I see it is that being a mermaid in total isolation like that is suffering and that she'd rather let it end and be someone else than be stuck any longer like that (of course she does lose her memories and herself, but at least she is not stuck in total isolation any longer).
Also, I'm not so sure the author censored anything on purpose, because this is actually the most calm material in the entire manga. There's one story in this where a girl is sexually tortured and treated as a dog in a torture dungeon to the point where she gets stockholm syndrome lol.
