I've never seen the group, but...DAMN. That's pointlessly cruel. (Both the reveal that MUCH more time passed, and the reveal she was freaking MURDERED).

The timing is also weird, because...how the HECK did the Senpai get away with it. (Did it close within the six months? Did she spend MUCh longer as a mermaid...because it doesn't make sense for it to close, if they could afford a REAL mermaid...)

Well, the original short story actually has more explanation on why everyone thinks she is an artificial lifeform and it also has less depressing ending.
Basically the management changes multiple times, the first time it changes because she wanted to return back after 6 months but the aquarium is so successful so they try to keep her as mermaid, they changed the management because the manger also wants her to return, the new manager is less caring for her and she began to sabotage the aquarium by attacking the fish but the new management makes up story that she actually lonely and wanted a friend, at first she feel repulsive about the new mermaid, the artificial lifeform but because she gets bored she started to play with the new mermaid. The time she spent as a mermaid span for more than three years. Originally, she also being given human food, but as time goes on and more and more people think she is just an animal her food is replaced by fish bait.

That sounds a lot better LostStranger. While it is definitely sad, and pretty dark, if she at least had some fun as a mermaid and with her friend then it isn't soul crippling depressing. They skipped over that though. While I guess the flashback scene covers it a bit, it seems more like the adult girl was remembering things incorrectly, since it was skipped over so suddenly. An extra page or two covering that time would of really helped.

In the story that i read on his site she survives in the end. The artificial cells only have lifespan of 3 years so her human part remained. She somehow survived with only her top torso remaining. And she is now living with one of the people who used to tend to the aquarium and is trying to sue the company. The people who set her up rewrote the contract from 6 months to 3 years. They probably thought that after 3 years she will die as other artificial mermaids and thus they wouldn't have to pay to get her old body back.
