Just briefly reading main change is probably doing black behind scan which will make it dark but will not get shadow from backside on other page. Will make it darker overall but then there is levelling option in photo editor or gimp. Not experienced myself but hopefully the guide i linked helps!

Edit:worked on it a bit myself and levelling made a world of difference with gimp. Will upload later maybe if you don't edit yourself(will include credits to you for original scan if i do). Also debating translating but not sure yet.
