This actually disturbed me, and not just cause of the rape and cannibalism. People wear masks in society to protect themselves and ensure social harmony. In this story, which feels almost Kafkaesque in its absurdity(sent to jail for a mean tweet? But then again in the UK such things do happen...), the main character is forced to endure bullying and wear a mask of politeness to hide her true feelings, which is that she is obviously pissed at the unjust and cruel treatment she receives. She clings to pudding as the one thing to get her through her jail time, to preserve her mask. But it doesn't matter. Her "true self" is exposed because everyone goes out of their way to push her buttons and take away that which is dear to her. And instead of being vindicated for speaking her mind, she is literally torn apart and devoured. It is very much a CS Lewis vision of hell. It's a bureaucracy with "rules" that ostensibly will protect you if you follow them, but of course the "demons" know to push any normal person to the point of breaking the "rules."
