I really wish this "consciousness merging" sort of absorption was more common.

It wouldn't even have to be anything dark or "yandere" in typical DATE fashion, you could easily make a "lighter and softer" version of the same concept with something like a goddess that encompasses the existence of all of reality (except for the male protagonist of course...or at least it could just seem that way at first).

The idea is that said goddess would incarnate into a single female body and, instead of assimilating random girls, said random girls would become "awakened" to this singular goddess consciousness - at which point they're effectively just extensions of the goddess' consciousness (like how the assimilated girls are extensions of the slime's consciousness in this manga).

In my eyes, this "absorption" thing lies somewhere between actually killing a living person and making her a vampire – perhaps closer to the latter.

Long years ago, comic artist Petri Hiltunen presented an interpretation of the modern vampire mythos where vampires were combinations of human beings and parasites. While providing relative immortality and enormous regeneration abilities, the parasite needed the human body as its host. The twist was that vampires had no knowledge of the biological mechanism; to them, simply "something had happened" and permanently changed their lives. They still had their human personalities and memories, which would only change due to the psychological effects of needing to feed on blood, becoming almost invulnerable to physical damage, and living for century after century. In the story, one vampire hired a specialist to run as many empirical experiments as were needed to find out what he actually was. The researcher did discover the host–parasite duality, but I do not remember whether anything was stated about the possible consciousness or personality of the parasite. Possibly the parasite was regarded as a plant or an animal without a human-like consciousness.

This story by Date is similar, except that the parasite does have a human-like consciousness, more or less. This consciousness dominates that of the host, but also mixes up with it in bizarre ways that leave the reader pondering. Have the victims actually died – as we understand death – or have they just gone through a forced transformation, somewhat similar to becoming vampires?

More importantly... Do the hosts still have moments or even periods when they genuinely believe they are the people they used to be? Could the parasite consciousness somehow be "switched off" so that the hosts would be in complete control of themselves, even if their bodies will never be the same again? If the parasite consciousness were switched off in such a way and the hosts would be presented a chance to keep that permanent, with the cost of losing most of their special slime abilities and suffering some unpleasant but bearable side effects for the rest of their lives... would they still wish to be free?

This Yuji guy is such a scumbag. He shows compunction yet still enables the slime to absorb innocents since he lacks a spine and is morally unscrupulous. It's pretty clear all his past misfortune in life is due to his life choices, it shouldn't have taken more than two girls for him to become privy to how the slime was gaining morphs. I'd like to have a more outwardly dastardly MC who happens upon the slime and intentionally gets it to collect girls rather than this Shinji-esque bitch boy, if we need the story to get more girl forms for the slime.

You know what this reminds me of? Saya no Uta. The guy is in love with a eldritch creature and he knows he shouldn't be helping it. He knows that it is hostile to the human race. But he doesn't care, because he loves it. He is acting evil but, I dunno, something about it makes me not hate it quite as much.

@dragoon93041 It is true that it has an air but we cannot fully compare it, the protagonist of that eroge does have morality, only that a series of situations joined together with his state of madness that did not allow him to see the general panorama of things the worst thing is does not have a happy ending whatever she does, her friend becomes that thing, the choices are either to spend the rest of her life in jail to regain her sanity or to watch the love of your life die while giving birth to her offspring and end humanity or end only with nightmares waiting with a bullet to commit suicide when you can no more ... the truth is that it does not have a good ending in reality only less bad.

Damn, it's such a unique story and the art is great.

The idea of assimilation shares ntr themes. The idea of a female rejecting a male and being forcefully taken and eventually coming around to enjoy the sex.

A lot of enjoyment in ntr comes in seeing the personality change, seeing someone who is so proper and conservative getting flipped into a crazy sex fiend, it's almost voyeuristic in the sense that I feel almost all of us have sexual urges and fantasies but we still carry the veil of normalcy in our day to day activities.

When people flip in ntr, it's like unlocking or bringing out that part of us which we are too afraid to show.

While this is certainly not in the ntr genre, I think the slime applied similar tactics, using shared memories and traits to show how each girl had their respective 'slutty' side, almost like turning a key on the mind in a sense.

I appreciate how well thought out the plot was and kudos to the translators. Great work. It says next vol in summer 2020, sadge.
