This is the usual work about 4 friends:

@ShoggothOfStone I read an interesting take the other day that the reason this works for so many people is it plays on the insecurity that late bloomers have that they've missed the boat, so to speak. As in they never really grew out of the "love is pure" phase, or grew too late vs their more experienced peers, so it's extra devastating for them.. There's probably a significant intersection between late bloomers and consumers of manga/anime. And the premise is probably more relatable than "rape", "blackmail", or other scenarios.

Honestly as an avid josei/shoujo reader I'm just a sucker for love drama. I wouldn't mind seeing the formula adapted for a female MC. There's tons of late bloomer girls judging by the popularity of "christmas cake" josei.
