@CatOfDarkness I think you are misinterpreting the French law. What is false in your interpretation is that a man can perfectly asks to verify his paternity if he wants to contest his fliation with a child through a legal procedure, after a judge has authorized the test ; what is true, however, is that a man cannot just go and test his filiation on his own by sending samples to a laboratory, as genetic tests are officially illegal and null in France outside of legal procedures and medical research (Article 16-11 of the Code Civil).

Also, it is true that if a woman tells her doctor that she is pregnant from another man than her husband, he doesn't have the right to tell him, but that's not a specific legal disposition against the husband (or if it's the case I never heard about it), but a general consequence of the medical secret.

What's deeply fucked up in this story, and although I don't really know Japanese laws about this, is that it's the wife who learns about her husband's infertility from the doctor, which is totally illegal according to this very same medical secret, and, obviously, the reasoning the doctor holds and the solution he suggests, which are completely unethical and even illegal, at least in France. So yes, reality is sometimes fucked up and there is probably some fucked up doctors out there, but "barely different" seems excessive to me.
