I... wow... You know, most of the time fan-created lore just makes things worse or breaks the character(s). They get tied up in narrative and expostulation trying to capture some moment of emotion that's difficult to convey.
This... gives me echoes of sadness beyond the typical "oh boohoo" or obvious gut-wrenching that most fan stuff wants you to mistake for emotion. Like watching someone finally make the decision to pull a loved one off of life support. Like watching someone willing to give anything and everything if they could, actually go through with it and knowing the result will only be fleeting.
On the other hand it also very neatly changes her character without breaking things... Well done.
edit------------ And for those keeping track at home, I don't equate the two examples to that nebulous feeling. I've lived through both and at one point was the person to make the decision in another, but it's the internet and hyperbole is very hard to avoid haha.
