Woo hoo! My upload's got way more white stars than most people's! Suck it, losers! You'll never be as popular as me!
Edit: It's interesting how much the ratings for this have changed. It was getting down pretty close to one star territory before, and with maybe double the votes, it's all the way up to three stars, which is maybe a bit closer to what I was expecting in the first place. It's obviously highly derivative—just new text for a picture story that already existed—and I'm hardly a poet, so I wouldn't expect it to rate nearly as well as authentic Carey Carter material, but once something is significantly below two stars, it indicates to me that the majority of people probably think it's trash, which I think is maybe a bit harsh. I'm wondering if the reason it was rating so low before, and so much higher now has mostly to do with expectations. Maybe the "rewrite" notation in the title was insufficient to alert people to the parameters of this project, and a fair number were therefore disappointed that all the art was the same (and then ratings shifted over time as people read the comments and adjusted their mindset accordingly)? Regardless, I don't think that ratings are everything, and I've certainly seen some low-rated galleries that I quite like, but other than comments, they're the only window here into how something is received. Sadly, however, ratings can't differentiate between everybody disliking something (making it a failure) and most everybody disliking it a bit more while some people really appreciate it (making it a success with a certain crowd). Anyway, my original comment here was meant to poke fun at myself, but I suspect it may have come off as being a bit petulant and if that's the case: my bad.
That's all it is, Blitach. I was going to offer a bit of explanation, but the "rewrite" tag seemed to have everything covered: "An individual has filled in their own text either in place of the original text or where there was none." In this case, the text is replacing/supplementing artdude41's.
If you like Carey's comics, you should try to share some new Artdude41's works, not just rewrite old comics. Anyway, I give 5 starts to any share of Artdude's works.
DXTRO, I can only work with what I have. I don't have any new Carey comics to share.
Five555, it's a very straightforward, one scene story, so I'd certainly agree that it lacks the substance to compete with the better Carey comics. I can't say if the dialogue is better or not, because I'm a little too close to it at this point to be able to evaluate it very well. I suspect that it may seem a little forced, but the primary aim was not to improve what was there, but to shift the narrative of the story from one where Dylan doesn't seem to intend harm and is upset over his mother's accidental death, to one where he is gleefully malevolent and actually celebrates it. Because the alternate endings don't have to reconcile themselves with the normal reality of the Carey comics, I always wanted to see some where the good guys turn evil and betray their friends. I found "Practice Imperfect" intriguing for this reason, though also rather disappointing, as the betrayal is very tame by the standard of these comics. Combine this with the simplicity of the action and a lot of dialogueless empty space, and it seemed like a good subject for a rewrite. Judging by the ratings the gallery is getting, I'm not sure most people would agree, though maybe they just find the execution flawed. Either way, if at least a few people dig it, I'll consider it worth the effort, so thanks for the compliment.
Thanks, arsg. I'd like to do more, but it's a lot of work for somebody with my very limited graphic skills (and my outdated shit that keeps glitching on me), and this particular story had a lot of dialog-less panels, making it easier to add captions (without having to replace/cover up existing bubbles, which usually aren't going to be the right size for whatever text I have in mind), so I would expect most other stories to be more work-intensive. Still, I might get inspired again, and if I do a more focused project where I strategically add or edit maybe a handful of captions (instead of dozens and dozens) such that they alter the direction of the story without necessitating such a large effort, then maybe the task wouldn't be so daunting. I guess we'll see.
As for your suggestion, I'd generally prefer that the victim be awake and aware when she's snuffed, but the art doesn't really go along with that, and for whatever reason, the scenario here actually works pretty well for me (if it didn't, I probably wouldn't have bothered with the rewrite). In any case, I'm unlikely to go through the trouble of changing things at this point. But I always appreciate hearing different takes from people on how they'd change stories like this if they could. If you've looked through some of the comment sections for other Carey Carter comics, you may have noticed me talking about what I would've liked for them to have done.
