...oddly, I feel like this is reflective of actual historical dynamics.

This was a massive problem for early colonies. On one side, you have healthy Natives with thriving agriculture and even trade economy (which usually had to be done on foot, so i am sure they had well developed glutes and thighs). On the other side, you had dirty, poor European peasants struggling to grow beans. So there was a large tendency for people to say 'fuck it', abandon their colonies, and run off to join the local tribes instead.
