History factoid: The mention of the "Grand Master" "burned to death by a greedy king" is a reference to Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar. The templars had (accidentally) become the de facto bank of Europe and King Philip IV, deeply in debt (and not wanting to pay it back), arrested him and his followers and had them tortured until they gave false confessions, and eventually burned him at the stake in 1314. One of the false accusations leveled against de Molay was suggesting that the templars performed pagan rituals before an idol of Baphomet. For bonus points, the pope was actually based out of Avignon, France at the time and was probably politically bullied into letting the whole shebang happen.

Zdrada (a demon of betrayal) was no doubt snickering the entire time. :P

Curiously, after de Molay's death, a legend sprung about the Tamplier gold - because, apparently, what was found in their keeps and vaults was lacking quite an amount. Over the passage of time the story grew and diverged, becoming another (pseudo)historical myth - like, say, El Dorado, or Norumbega.

Some, pox on their nethers, even suggested that some of the Knight Templars escaped the persecution by going East, to the land of Frontier, known in its native language as Ukraine; where they became founders of the first Zaporozhian Sich. Naturally, it is surmised that they took the gold with them, and buried it somewhere in the lands of Cossacks, Khortitsa Island usually named as a most probable location.

Some, even more pox on their nethers, go so far, even, as to link Templar with the Gold of Polubotok - another curious myth of missing treasures, supposedly taken and Switzed away by the British bankers...
