If it isn't too trouble, could you save images that aren't full color as grayscale? In Photoshop you do it by changing image mode, can be done at any time but the most benefit are if you do it at the start; the save files will be smaller, it will use less RAM to work on them, less time for you to upload them on the gallery and for the 100's of readers to download.
Moreover if the images are under a certain size E-H will leave them as they are instead of creating a downsampled JPG copy for display...
