I get the joke is Knuckles is dumb, but how does one flunk recess? A joke still has to have logic. Also, Sonic may be breaking the 4th wall, but at least it makes sense.

This is on brand with Boom's humor. They often break the fourth wall and turn Knuckles into the idiot jock character, but ham it up to eleven. The failing recess joke work because that actually how dumb they wrote his character 99% of the time. So yes, he would somehow fail at doing literally nothing as if the writers is trying to prove a point in how stupid he is. Then the other 1% of the time would be him randomly say something profound and philosophical just for the contrast.
