Thanks for posting this. While I do think his attempt to make the women more realistic and detailed has resulted in some uncanny valley ugliness (multiplied, perhaps, by his apparent attraction to older women, and the aspects of them that others might consider blemishes*), in general, it's not a big hangup for me, because I just get used to it after a bit. A lot of art is honestly pretty weird and distorted when you actually think about it (anime big eyes are absolutely deformed, and folks whack off to porn of The Simpsons), and it's just that we're more accustomed to those stylizations. I am, however, hoping that this is all part of a process of increasing subtlety and finesse (and decreasing garishness), resulting in women who are at least as attractive as they were before, but more vivid and detailed. Certainly, I think they stand to get at least a bit better from here, as he hones his craft.

As far as the overall story goes, I don't know. I did enjoy it, but I'm largely focused on the alternate endings, and the length of this one made it a bit of a slog to get through. (And skipping straight to the alternate endings would rob them of their frame of reference and proper impact.) This one also feels a bit perfunctory at times. We've seen the same drama points before, and I enjoy those, so I don't necessarily have an issue with them, but it all feels a bit rote the way things are carried out. I'm not sure if I'm jaded, or maybe he is, but we seem to gloss over scenes without enjoying what should be their proper emotional impact.

It is, of course, possible that I just wasn't in the right mood for this one, or that it didn't click with me for a number of little, idiosyncratic reasons not indicative of any larger issue (and that I'm just seeing things in a negative light because of those), but for all the time and effort that obviously went into this one, I feel it's a bit disappointing, and certainly not one of my favorite Carey comics. A disappointing Carey story is still something that stands out though, and I don't want to go too far in my griping. Like I said: I did enjoy it... just not as much as I would like to have.

*It is actually rather nice to see older women get represented though. I'm just not sure that the art style is doing them any favors, at least as far as my own, personal tastes go.
