Convert your black and white images in grayscale (Image => Mode => Grayscale). Also, level them (Layer => Adjustment layer => levels).

Your pages right now are in RGB, which gives them this ugly-ass brown tint, and they're also faded. Staying in RGB also bloats your file size.
