Edit: It sucks even more imho considering Maui Mallard's (that's what I call the artist since I have a hard time pronouncing his name correctly and it sounding vaguely hawaiian lol) manga is freaking amazing~! Everything seemed to be leading to the conclusion you described here. Instead its a lot more melancholy than that (which is jarring since this manga has had an almost Animaniacs-like tone for the rest of its run).
