Problem is that the only thing that can improve is the grammar. If they're just tossing everything and getting an MTL how do we judge the accuracy of the translation? What's the difference between this and a rewrite?

If you know some very basic Japanese, you can figure out when "no that's not right". Even if you don't know the proper translation, you can tell when Google Translate, DeepL or ChatGPT are pulling stuff out of their digital ass.

When sentences have perfectly good grammar, the subject matter is simple and no kanji names are involved, machine translation TENDS to do a good job (exceptions, of course). But that's exactly why pure MTL is awful for doujins (names, moans, incomplete sentences, etc); you need to at least have some basic notion of Japanese grammar and check Jisho or similar resources when in doubt.
