The original comic lost its way and the artist got bored. So they killed it and rebooting the story.

Same cast with some edits. Different story.

Artist could have at least finished the chapter before rebooting. Or at least finished a "don't leave it in a cliffhanger midd-fight" page before rebooting. You know, just so NOT being a dick. I understand desire to reboot if the storyline was going nowhere, but that was kind of rude towards the readers

@God Revan: The authors are atists, but they are also assholes. You wanna reboot a story? Go ahead. Marvel and DC have done that so many times I lost count. You CAN do it. But if you do it in the middle o a story arc, even more, in the middle of a fight scene, whithout even a "sending off" page to give closure to the readers, THAT is being rude. Even worst, needlessly rude. The readers sometimes think they deserve more than they do, but the reverse (authors thinking the readers don't deserve anything) is also false: EVERYBODY deserves common courtesy, readers and authors alike.

And no, "the author is disilusioned with the old story" doesn't cut it - because doing a send-off page does count as starting a new tale PROPERLY (been there, done that) and even a single-panel with a wall of text would have sufficed.

Writer here, for those wondering why it got rebooted, there were a number of factors as to why it was ended in such a way and I understand why people would get mad at it. I've listed the reasons below but overall I just couldn't keep it going. It just wasn't healthy for me to continue. But I'm happy with this comic. I'm no longer spending half of my paychecks covering costs like I used to do. I no longer have that luxury so I do what I can with the help of those on Patreon and Gumroad. I can't do anymore than that no matter how badly I want to.

Why did I reboot Deviants?
1. No passion. I have been wanting to start over for a long, long time. I can change the direction of the comic but I didn't like the foundation for it. So to me the story would never be to my liking. The sense of closure you'd get from any kind of ending would be incomplete, hollow, and insincere.
2. Patreon changed what was allowed on its platform. That changed the story and forced me to remove content that they didn't approve of.
3. That happened a few years ago and the majority of support for Sexyverse came from the cut content and when that was removed, support dropped drastically. Turns out many patrons were interested in another comic that could no longer be on the platform. That was not a good realization for me.
4. The comic is reliant on financial support, with me paying for over half of the costs myself for over three years. I commission artists to put art to my script and every month I had hoped that I wouldn't be spending half of my paycheck on it. After a while I've had to cut back on content because I couldn't afford it anymore.
5. Sexyverse Games was a side project that grew incredibly fast and proved to be more popular and time consuming. After a while I started seeing continuous growth while Sexyverse Comics continued to decline.
6. That led to me getting a new artist for the comic while putting the comic's original artist to work on our games. Long before that happened Deviants was already dropped to updating once a week and any other comic was cancelled. Reminder that the comic was consistently in decline over the past few years.
7. It got to the point where I had to change back to the original artist and was faced with the perfect time to reboot the comic. Switching artists and then later rebooting the comic would have doubled the whiplash. I know people wanted a satisfying conclusion but it would not have been good.
8. I knew it would rub some people the wrong way but I wanted to start the reboot as soon as possible.

Personally, I loved the old story. It was much more enjoyable imo. The new one is not interesting to me because it takes the same characters and rewrites the entire thing while changing the characters around. Characters that I grew to know from the first story. With this reboot, it's now very jarring.

Imagine this: Take The Justice League. Now, rewrite it so they're just civilians who are doing things somewhat similar. They fight crime, but as normal people except like 2 people who have powers. Their personalities are mostly intact, but it's just normal crime fighting. Sure, "Superman" is in it, but it's really some normal dude named Clark Kent who happens to be a regional power lifting multiple time champ who can knock the snot out of most people in one hit. He only has the name "Superman" because he's so strong. That's what this reboot did to me.

On the flipside, if I had never read the original I'd never be in this situation where I am now. I'd actually not be reading it at all as my filters only hit this for tomgirl (to which there's no instance of whatsoever). If I DID read this it would be an interesting read for a bit, but that would be it. Story isn't super interesting, world isn't explained, no backstory on anything.. It's a very "cum and leave" kinda story.

All in all, I think the story itself for me is spoiled by the original story and reusing the characters and rewriting them too. Excluding this, story is bland as it's literally a "fuck my son he needs help" and "meet and fuck" (not saying the original wasn't very meet and fuck, but there was a whole story in it). There's been nothing engaging on this so I'm giving it a hard pass. I'll check back in once in a while to see if it gets any better but likely not since this is the direction the writer wanted it to go from the start anyway. Nothing wrong with that, just not my thing.

@Tess Verres I agree with what you are saying but you really should have picked a better analogy. Comicbooks get "rewritten" all the time. That is why there are many different variations of the same characters.

The story in this version is, frankly, inferior. The problem isn't the writing; the problem is that, fundamentally, all ideas have a certain amount of potential. For instance, Batman is a more interesting character than Superman Why? Because there's just less you can do with Supes. His power is to have all the powers, but that's kind of the problem. He's too powerful, his lack of limitations places a cap on how engaged we can be, because, at the end of the day, we never really doubt Superman is going to win, and he's probably going to win by punching something really hard.

Batman, on the other hand, is just- a guy, he' just a guy. He's rich, and well equipped, smart and highly trained. But at the end of the day, when he fights Bane, he gets his back broken and has to go through months of intensive physical therapy. Which- is just not a story you can tell with Superman. Ironically, because Batman is less powerful than Superman, you're able to tell a wider array of stories with him. But you know how's even more interesting than Batman? Nightwing, who is who just Batman, but slightly worse.

The same concept applies to concepts for stories. So, what have we done, well, we had a story about a unique individual, an incubus in a world where incubi are supposed to be extinct, there's a mystery, our protagonist is an aberration, how did he come about? Incubi didn't just go extinct, they were hunted to extinction because they're dangerous, there's conflict, people are going to want to control, or hurt him because of what he is.

Now, the story is about a normal human whose mother is a pimp. Also a gigolo I guess.

I struggle to come up with an apt comparison. But I guess it'd be kind of like if you took Baccano! Or like, JoJo or something, and rebooted it, but the reboot is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Like, I enjoy slice of life, but that would be a downgrade, no one would be happy with this, and they would be correct to be unhappy with it.

I can appreciate not wanting to continue a project, I am a novelist, it happens. I can understand abandoning a project, though I find doing so when you are releasing said project for public consumption to be questionable. What I cannot honestly comprehend is taking a project that you are publishing for public consumption, abandoning it, and spinning it off into a structurally inferior story using the same characters.

I just, don't get it.

So I'm sitting here wondering what convinced the author to go for a more simplistic story compared to whatever happened in the original.

Also couldn't help wondering what Patreon did that caused the author to change up the original story that caused that mass exodus of his fans from his patreon. What was in the original story that was so bad that Patreon had to complain about it?

While I would have liked to have seen an ending for the old comic I support and respect the decision of the writer to start anew. Continuing a project you no longer have love for is not good.
Plus I like the changes made here, tweaking the characters to be more likeable, more variety of Deviant species and a lighter tone that fits better with the premise of a world of sexy crazy monster people.
I'm hoping for versions of XTC and Melinda, maybe Melinda still works with the Enforcers and clashes with Meredith on the Benefactors in arguments that inevitably descend into sex.

All right. It's time for me to finally to give my opinion. This will be a long one, so ignore if ya like.

First, I'd like to point out that I've read the first version of Deviant since it came out. I will try to minimize the comparison. However, it will be inevitable as this is a reboot. Therefore, I will criticize the writing quality from the transition of a over arching plot to a simple slice of life story. Let's begin.

First, the characterization is not fleshed out enough. For example, all I know about James is that he can cook, has a big dick and can fuck for hours with multiple partners on the same day, despite being human. While I understand I have to suspend my disbelief in a setting full of monstergirls, the author is asking too much, as the first story James was an Incubus and it was believable for him to have sex without rest. While I consider James characterization to be fine in the first story, here he's okay at best and he's the best character so far, which is not a good sign. As for the rest of the cast, calling them two dimensional would be generous as they only have one character trait and then immediately start fucking. They barely sit down and have a conversation. And even when they do, it's always about sex.

"But Lolzu! Did you expect there to be a story, proper character development and interaction in porn?"

Well...yes. If the writer can pull of a decent story for the first iteration, then I expected for them to do it here. Especially in a simpler story. This could've given them more leeway to further explore the characters and world building in a normal setting. Which other works have already done and better.

"Imagine actually ranting about a porn not having a good story. Lol"

To point out comments similar to this. This isn't a ten page doujin where it's expected for characters to meet and fuck on the fly. This is an ongoing series which is in the triple digits of pages. That's a considerable amount to ask of someone for a shallow story. The first one may not be the best thing in the world, but there were events happening outside of sex. Fuck there were even fights.

This one, James just meets a women, exchange names and fuck. Same thing applies for the rest. A missed opportunity happened with Cheryl's mother. Instead of quickly fucking seconds after meeting, they both could've sat down and discuss what it means to marry a Succubus. Hell, this could've made James hesitate a bit as fucking a whole family Succubus and Incubus could be too much or even kill him. There would be some proper tension in which their relationship could be put to question. Just something else that doesn't have them touching each other's genitalia. I'm sure with the abundance of sex, a couple chapters without it wouldn't be a problem.

Let me list the positives since I don't need to delve to deep on them.

1. Lots of MILFs. Love them mommies.

2. The art is good. Honestly, anybody that can draw at all and that good automatically is a point up.

3.Leprechaun. Cause they're surprisingly absent in a lot of media nowadays. So it's nice to see another short stacked woman that's not a goblin, gnome or dwarf.

4. Casual sex and sex work. It's shown in a positive light and it's refreshing that they don't treat sex like this mystical custom that should only be done during very brief occasions. And I'm glad that James and Cheryl are in a relationship despite that, so that's awesome.

All in all, slightly disappointed with this reboot. I wish there was more to chew on, but maybe there'll be something in the future. Who knows? Anyways. Peace.
