If you have to use a single word, then make use of "spirit" or something similar, but "self" doesn't fit at all.

Yes, consciousness was also on my list of possible options. But I decided against it because consciousness can be interpreted as the momentary state of being aware and in control of the current situation. Losing one's consciousness could then be interpreted as just being knocked out and doesn't really do the gravity of the situation justice. Personality is more interpreted as one's behavior in social interactions and not really a sort of self awareness. I opted out for "identity" at the beginning but was also not entirely happy with it. And didn't want to go for spirit or soul as it obviously wasn't the idea.

Self isn't ideal, I admit that. Fair critique point, but eventually i feel a bit like there wasn't really a good solution.
