It's because of an application on Apple phones called AirDrop, it comes installed with all of them
You can send images or files to other iPhones near you even, if you don't know them, and it shows a preview like in here

note that apple has made a patch about a year ago that makes it so you can only get airdropped by “contacts” (or turn it off), the “everyone” mode has been limited to 10 minutes at a time before switching back
