this is actually really helpful for foriegners who are learning japanese, if you have practiced with Hiragana and Katakana recognition and pronunciation you can actually "Speak" everything on the cards as they give the Hiragana or Katakana of the Kanji characters.
Kanji are not an alphabet, they are more like words in a dictionary, so by giving the reader the hiragana or katakana the reader (even a young child) can learn to pronounce them. (even if they have no idea what it means once they do). and then children ask their parents "what does 'rakiriwoukuutenawomamoru.' mean?" and us foriegners go look up the hiragana next to or above the kanji in an online dictionary and figure it our ourselves.
