I didn't have this issue but Protoculture Addicts was one of the few english language anime magazines we had. Being an anime fan in the 90s and especially the 80s was rough. The further you go back, getting any news on anime and manga was hard to get. Few stores catered to anime VHS tapes or even DVDs when those arrived in the late 1990s. If they did the sections for it were small.

I still recall being amazed when some random comic book store in the USA had the original Japanese language Newtype magazines. Didn't understand a damn thing in the Newtype mags but we could at least look at the pictures and guess what was being talked about. No internet that everyone could hop on and make fan sites on this stuff yet.
This was the niche stuff like Protoculture Addicts filled.
Of course, when the internet became a bigger deal, stuff like Protoculture Addicts' days were numbered as everything slowly shifted online.
