Her name is Rydia. FFIV came out over 30 years ago and it has remained Rydia in every version released in English since. If it was going to change it already would have.

@Oriandu Why is every other character a traditional name: Cecil, Cain, Rosa, Sid, Edward (Yang 's Chinese, and weird Mysidian names aside). Lydia is a traditional name. There is no distinction between "R" and "L" in Japanese. Do you think they meant some weird name or were very obviously transcribing Lydia? Come on now.

@Ms. H Cain? That guy isn't in the game. Neither is Sid. Kain and Cid are though. And look at that, a slight twist to a traditional name by changing the first letter! I wonder if this may or may not apply to a woman who's name start with R and ends with ydia.

@Shin Verus

oh ffs, do you not know any Japanese? There is no "C" in Japanese, it's an American translation error. Also, that's why they had to use the "K" for Cain, there is no "C" in Japanese (Chi does occur, but always as the full Chi sound)

Sid / Cid in Japanese is シド (Shi-do), but it's written in katakana so the reader knows it's a foreign name
Kain / Cain in Japanese is カイン (Ka-i-n) same
Lydia in Japanese is リディア (Ri-dia) again, katakana so we know it's a foreign name tranaslitered. well, I've never met any Rydias, have you? And Buruma is DragonBall's transliteration of Bloomer (mistranslated as Bulma, see cause her dad is Dr. Briefs and her son is Trunks, the theme is underwear). "R" stands for the English "L" all the time because Japanese has no L. No couple that with the fact that Nintendo USA's original FFIV translation was notoriously inaccurate, and in general translations in that period sucked, and her name is Lydia dammit. I thought she was Rydia when I was a kid too, then I learned some damn Japanese.

Her name was very clearly originally intended to be Lydia, but for whatever reason Square has consistently kept it as Rydia in every English release of Final Fantasy IV, including the DS version for which they paid actors to read aloud lines that include the character's names. Contrast this with how Aeris from Final Fantasy VII has been called Aerith in all FF7 media released after the original PS1 game.

Officially, Lydia is Rydia, just like how Gilbert is Edward.
