Okay...I think I have an explanation for the story...

If the woman is a spirit [as in monster, not ghost], then that would explain a good deal of the plot. Like how she doesn't appear to age. And her saying that they live in different worlds. The reason that she says that they won't be able to see each other soon is because the shrine is being torn down, which she is presumably linked to. Shrine demolished, she vanishes (or something like that).

For a second after reading page 16, I thought his "real form" is that beetle/grasshopper-like insect, and then I realized his leaning his head onto her lap.

She's a 產土神 (meaning Goddess of land and birth, FYI:https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%94%A3%E5%9C%9F%E7%A5%9E)， which is believed to nourish land and protect its sons and daughters; somehow , she's deeply tied to the shrine. In the end and begin, you can see there's a excavator and her shrine is about to be torn down, which will cause her to be obliterated. And that's why Hiroki ran back to hometown once knowing the destruction and why she asked Hiroki not to forget her in the very end ...... Furthermore, she called Hiroki "onushi" (おぬし) which is an ancient term. Just like "thee" in English. And considering that she never gets old and says something like Hiroki was intoxicated by bad things in City, and all the residents are gone , I think all these evidence could support the conclusion I made at the very begin.

In Japanese and Chinese culture, we often believe that "Gods" and "Goddes" are spiritual "creature" who have their own feelings as well.
