I'm not a pdf fan but this is just my guess. These digital doujin, usually originally in pdf format. When you convert from one format to another (this true for picture, sound or video) there will be some loss in quality. Different ripping programs also can result in different quality. So people who want the ultimate best quality, they will hunt the pdf or whatever the original format is.
