Given how nonsensical and dumb the rest of the series was I fail to see the problem.

I find it kind of ironic that this fancomic borrows from the original comic's artstyle. The idea the Starlights ever actually change gender was an addition by the television show. The original creator, who just have them crossdress most of the time, thought the change was nonsensical and dumb.
