More translator notes does not make for a better translation. Quite the contrary - if you can't get jokes instantly, without multiple translator's notes both inline and at the end, then they're not funny any more and you're not getting the same experience as native readers. Hence you're not reading a good translation.

With all of that said, the translator probably couldn't have been expected to do too much better than this, at least not without rewriting the majority of the puns, which is verging on impossible with so many visuals binding you to certain ideas.
