Dunno about the sewing up part, but clitoris removal actually happens in a few places in Africa. It's the equivalent of cutting off a penis' head, so it's a damn shame.

That phrase, "female genital mutilation"... people seem to misuse it when they don't understand how other cultures see it.

@daitengu Of the cultures that practice female genital surgery, it's pretty uncommon for there to be any sewing, but removing the clitoris and labia is somewhat common. Those that practice this custom see this as beautification and as a right of passage in becoming a woman.

@CronaBaka: Removal of the clitoris is mutilation, the same as removal of the head of the penis would be. The resulting nerve damage can destroy a woman's ability to orgasm. In one of my classes we met a woman who was a victim of FGM early in her life. After her clit was removed, they sewed up her vagina and years later when the sutures were removed all the menses that were stuck in her came rushing out in doctor's office.

It isn't beatification, it's ugly and ultimately about controlling women.

And it isn't the same as male circumcision, as men can still orgasm after being circumcised.

@CronaBaka the problem is, that in reality it is performed without consent so thats wrong.
@glib24 US has equivalent custom named circumcision for men and it is also exists with purpose to control men.

However it can be considered beautification, because that mutilation is performed by women not men and purpose is to obtain better husband.
because mutilated woman is considered more desirable. I am pretty sure most of those women would choose it on their free will just like western women choose boob implants.

It is irrelevant if men still can orgasm after circumcision because If someone decided to cut your ears or half of your fingers you would be still capable to hear sounds or use your, hands but everyone would consider that mutilation. Male circumcision also severely reduces sensitivity and causes other problems.

@Omega22 I'm glad that you brought up that last point. It's actually something that was brought up in my Anthropology class. It is a tricky and controversial subject that requires some cultural relativism to be taken into account.
