I think it's more by conviction.
Goku fights because he like fighting, Vegeta fights to prove he's stronger than Kakarot. Tarble doesn't really fight, Broly's insane, Gohan fights because he has no choice, Trunks and Goten fights because it's fun, Mirai Trunks... kinda obvious.

Bardock fights because he wants to protect.
