Furutaka's character design based on several events. One of them was Battle of Cape Esperance, where she used a search light (her left eye) to cover her sister ship Aoba (fleet leader) by becoming a decoy. In the non-kai 2 art her left eye also has burn marks, which shows the heavy fire damage she sustained.

The joke in the community is that Aoba has killed many of her sisters by bad tactical decision, making her a very bad leader in general.
