That 'Blueberry Girl' scene from the original "Willy Wonka" must have REALLY had a strange effect on some hormone riddled teenage boys at the time, huh? ^_^

It's been going on for a while.

Balloons are very sexual yet create a tension of popping-so, many cartoons going back to the 30's show characters inflating like balloons (one Little Rascals even had Alfalfa inflate his belly at the threat of exploding). It got weirder with Space Adventure Cowboy (which echoed or was echoed by Elflord #6). It was mostly played up for horror , and anything expansion that was "erotic" was da' breasts. Tim Burton's "Charlie..." just revitalized belly inflationism.

Oh, and RIP, Maximum_Joe.
