@bigbrown: I wouldn't say it's a joke, just a wildly different way to tell the story. But I'm glad I saw the anime first, because while I wasn't crazy about the way the second season ended, I like where the manga is headed even less. And the anime is what got me hooked, at least on the earlier parts of the story.

It's just the hybrids/half-ghouls (they'd be extinct otherwise). If it's a Male Ghoul x Female Human, the fetus starves because it doesn't get the nutrients it needs; Male Human x Female Ghoul, the mother's body notices the human cells and considers it food, breaks it down and absorbs it.
