People sometimes dislike OC's because they are so often an excuse for the author/artist to shamelessly insert themselves into a story or a comic/movie/cartoon universe and to live vicariously through their OC.
OC's also tend to lack depth, and are often Mary Sue type characters especially when the OC is basically a better and more attractive version of the author/artist (again, shameless self insert).
Obviously there are some really good OC's, however most of them aren't.

mostly, is because of the furry fandom (and subfandom): around the 2000, many OC went the way of "I'm so edgie the air I breath cut titanium" "OC have XK-EOW power but he does not use them" and the dreaded red&black color scheme or the recolor for mary sue, while non furry OC became mass produced anime-tropes. regardless of thef andom, many OC where randomly shipped with every other charachter in the show, usually disregarding gender, orientation, and food preferencies.

The furry fandom somehow was never on my radar much until a week ago when I met someone who builds fur suits.
But yes, I do remember seeing cringeworthy edgy furry OC's with scene/emo hairdos at least once. That's when I noticed there was a side to deviantart I started referring to as "the wrong side".

What peeves me is when people make (for example) female saiyan OC's, and have that OC look really conventionally feminine and pretty (and not muscular like saiyans are supposed to be) and have a saiyan tail and have that OC fuck pretty much every male lead character in the show regardless of established relationships and personal interests of the existing characters.
They pretty much write existing characters as acting out of character, erase other existing characters just to open up a spot just so they can self insert themselves in this media universe for some mental masturbation. They're basically writing/drawing their own spank bank with themselves as main characters.

Fan fics are even worse with this. I get very suspicious whenever I see AU mentioned because it usually ends up in a lazy self insert. To be honest I haven't read a fanfic in years.
Blame it on raging teenage hormones I guess, that is where cringy OC's are born.

What I don't like is that an OC was just thrown in with some actual characters. It's distracting. Make them all original, or hell at the very least change their costumes colors!
