@shuntensatsu It's actually true, rabbits and some other mammals basically have double-digestion systems where they can get nutrients from poop they missed the first time around. They just can't get ALL the nutrients they need from poop, and it doesn't really work as well the third time, so they're not self-sustaining.

@shuntensats Herbivores have it rough. Plants often make it hard to digest them (particularly the leafy bits that usually show up, as compared to the nutritious roots, or the fruits that evolved to attack animals). It takes a lot of chemicals to properly digest the fiber, as well as specialized organs. It isn't like predators who hunt food that is already made entirely out of chemicals useful for animals. It is far easier for a zebra to eat a dead body it just happens to find than for a lion to live off grass.

Due to the intense task of living off pure greens, rather than making a more powerful digestive organ (which would consume a lot of energy, and just be a drag when food is scarce), many animals try to find ways to double down by sending the food through again. Of course, many animals prefer to just throw up and send the food back to the mouth (this is seen with cows and 'cud' if I remember right).

It is the same food, they just didn't process it well enough the first time, so they continue to eat until it is used up.

@shuntensatsu: Actually, that's pure nature right there. A rabbit's digestion system is rather poorly designed for it's diet. So, they eat normal food and only digest some of their food, making a soft and easier to digest poop. Then they eat their first poop and redigest it for even more nutrients and such. And then finally poop a second time, a much harder and darker poop that's almost all pure waste.
