It's crazy coming back to this 8 years later and realizing that Nanashi never intended Nagatoro to be scary or mean.
She was always written as insecure and unable to deal with her own insecurities in a healthy way.
When she's saying all those mean things to Senpai, she's just projecting what she thinks of herself.
She wouldn't hang out with Senpai if she thought his art was trash and that he was a lesser person.
It's not just Senpai who's in tears; from page 40 onward Nagatoro is on the brink of tears. She hates what she's saying
But she also can't stand the thought of going out with her Senpai and losing him down the line.

This is why she say's "I might break you". She's terrified of fucking up and losing him. This is why she panics so hard at the end of Ch 2.
Page 47 is probably the happiest Nagatoro has ever been drawn and she literally doesn't know how to deal with these emotions.
She proceeds to call him her toy because if she commits and she loses him, she'd be heart-broken.

Until the ending of the manga happens, it is my fanon belief that what we are reading...The beginning of Nagatoro, is actually the moment Nagatoro and Senpai decide to be a couple in the manga.

8 years ago, I was in high school and read this. I thought this was some light erotic S&M fantasy.
Having followed Nanashi from guro artist to NaruHina vanilla writer. I'd genuinely say he writes some of the most heartfelt and intimate character interactions I've ever seen.
I don't know what happened, but I'm glad he came to write such intense moments of happiness in what was always just socially awkward characters.

Senpai and Nagatoro are just 2 awkward people with social anxiety; they both have different ways of coping and were able to find their own unique brand of happiness in each other.
