I get that game makers separate the overlays in order to save space. But seriously, we all got enough disk space these days.

Even if the game uses such compression, this is not how to share it with others.

But that said it can really make a difference. I made a custom image format which makes it possible to store it as overlays, but show it normally. (And of course a program which automatically which tries to find the best way of using overlays.) My estimates are that this set would use about 350 MB without overlays, and around 40 MB if properly compressed. Some real numbers from another cg set: normal size was 1136 MB and after I ran it through my program it was reduced to 66 MB.

Sure, we might have lots of space nowadays but still, isn't it a giant waste to use 5-20x as much space to store the same?

Do keep in mind games like these are also soft-distributed online through DMM or DLsite and such nowadays. Imagine yourself downloading several extra hours of fluff whereas you could have done downloading and started playing it hours before if redundancy was minimized.

Someone said "Saving the images like this won't save you much space." But actually it did, all the png files went from 255mb to 1,47gb...
Several images even got 16 "variants" even though they used overlays that had already been used for other images so it honestly saved the company a lot of space.
